Bill takes the steps in the hospital with Ebby. In the early days you took most if not all the steps at the same time.
But, there were only originally 4-6 steps since the program was based on the Oxford Group basic six tenants. Bill would expand these to be the 12 steps as we know them. ‘Takes the steps to the best of Bills ability’, this is important. We MUST give ourselves over totally and completely to the steps for the program to work. And that makes this the easiest and hardest part of the program.
If we do this; then we will experience the transformation power of the vital spiritual experience. This is the gift the program can give us to relieve us from the obsession of alcohol and put our lives on the path of our higher power. And the next time Bill felt like having a drink he found another alcoholic to work with. Not to help the suffering alcoholic as much to keep Bill from taking that next drink. Working with others and doing service to and with others is a simple idea that prevents many of us from that next slip.
This is the design for living that can keep us sober, happy, peaceful and free.
